Halloween in Prague

This blog post is brought to you by the Obligatory Man on a Horse Statue

Along with the considerably more epic Man on a Lion Statue:

This past weekend a few people and myself made the venture to Prague in the Czech Republic to check out the sights. And it was Halloween - the best holiday, in my opinion, so I had expectations. However, Prague seemed intent on disabling those fairly quickly. Much to my disappointment, no one seemed keen on celebrating Halloween, unless it was to get drunk -which was not what I had in mind. Ah well, I was in Prague, so that's something isn't it?

Let's begin. We arrived in Prague at 7:30 on Friday after taking the overnight bus. And we were running as soon as we hit the ground. Starting the day with the free tour, we visited half a dozen churches I don't remember the name of. As usual, I will continue to post my poor attempts to capture the beauty inside them.

These people and their mummified hands.

This is probably my favorite exterior of any cathedral so far. It's pretty neat

The church of Our Lady

There was lots happening in the Main Square of Old Town, to list a few: Segway tours,

Alexis testing out a new set of wheels

The oldest functioning astronomical clock in Europe. At noon precisely, the twelve apostles make their appearance through the small blue panels as the clock chimes.

I spy...a skeleton! Halloween has been slightly redeemed! Though why they thought it necessary to put it on the clock in 1410, escapes me.

And Bubbles! Bubbles bubbles everywhere! So many people were playing with bubbles!

We ended the tour at the largest opera house in Prague where we stuck around with the tour guide who took us to a restaurant to try some traditional Czech food.

We're ready for food!

This was surprising yummy. Cranberries, whipped cream and beef - who knew?

Then we took the opportunity to do some of our own sightseeing, which mainly consisted of walking around the castle area.

A dog gargoyle. I'm a fan.

The outside may have looked like any other church in Europe. Maybe even the inside. However, I personally found this stained glass prettier than that of Notre Dame. There I said it. And I'm not taking it back.

And we visited a toy museum, because why not? And a toy museum with Darth Vader? Yes please.

There he is just hanging out in the corner with the teddy bear

And we visited the John Lennon wall. It was kind of bizarre, but cool I suppose. Anyone can add to the wall and it's created a cool sort of collage.

We may be exhausted, but we're a good looking group of people

Day one comes to a close

When we reached our hostel, the bed was much welcomed. And I can say this was my first experience sleeping on the top of a three-story bunk bed.

Another city, another currency, another language. Halloween was a long day. All of us were exhausted by the end and took long naps before some of us had enough energy to check out the city at night. It may not have been the Halloween I was expecting, but it was a Halloween nonetheless.

More to come!
